Fiborn Quarry was accompanied by a village that had a post office and a company store with the only telephone in town. The school in Fiborn opened in 1907 and served an average of twenty students a year through the seventh grade. We Fiborn Quarry was one of the largest early 20th century quarry operations in the Upper Peninsula. The name Fiborn was coined by combining Fitch and Osborn, the last names of the two original co-owners of the quarry. The DSS&A built a 3.8 mile branch from Fiborn Junction to Fiborn Quarry in 1905 and 1906. Fiborn Quarry was a small town built at a limestone quarry northwest of St. Ignace in 1904, and was completely deserted by 1940. It makes an interesting and Fiborn Quarry Video. In a remote area of the Eastern Upper Peninsula of Michigan lies and abandoned time capsule of limestone mining history. The abandoned Fiborn Quarry. We explore the quarry, its remaining buildings and some of its history. Fiborn Quarry sits at the heart of an area of subtle but unusual character. A narrow band of nearly pure limestone, within a larger mass of less pure rock of the Niagara Escarpment, outcrops here. Situated between wetland areas to the south and the Hendrie River to the north is a place where time, mankind, and nature have left a unique imprint. Fiborn fell on hard times after the post-war recession in 1921-22, but business continued to pick up through the late twenties and the quarry made several purchases of new housing and rail cars.

The unusually pure limestone found in what is now the Fiborn Karst Preserve led to development of Fiborn Quarry, which operated from early 1905 until January 1936. The quarry mined, crushed and shipped limestone for use mostly in steelmaking, but also calcium carbide manufacturing and road building.
